Relics from happenings
For Lubo Kristek, a work of art is never a closed or self-contained object. Alongside sculptures, assemblages, and paintings, he also creates happenings – unique events situated at the intersection of visual art, theatre, music, and ritual. Many of these take place in open landscapes, at historical sites, or in spaces that are transformed, if only briefly, into living works of art.
The Lubo Kristek Museum preserves relics from these events – objects, props, fragments of assemblages, documents, and artworks created directly during the happenings themselves. These are not merely mementos of past performances. They are carriers of stories and energies linked to specific moments when art unfolded directly among people.
Some of the exhibited objects have undergone remarkable transformations. They first emerged as independent works, later became part of happenings, and eventually found their place in the museum. As a result, they bear traces of different periods, contexts, and environments. One example is the assemblage So That You Could Not Steal Me.
These relics offer insight into the ephemeral dimension of Kristek’s work, which would otherwise survive only in the memories of participants and in archival records. They testify to the fact that, for the artist, not only the artwork itself matters, but also the event, the encounter, and the experience it generates. Within the exhibition, moments are brought back to life whose frequencies became imprinted upon subsequent layers of Kristek’s artistic practice and continue to resonate within it to this day.
